This generation is an evil generation

10 OCTOBER (Lk 11,29-32)
What Jesus says of his generation, which is evil, the Lord God always said it of the generation of the children of Israel. Moses wrote a song as an eternal memory so that nobody forgot and everyone remembered about their stubborn hearts.

Give ear, O heavens, while I speak; let the earth hearken to the words of my mouth! May my instruction soak in like the rain, and my discourse permeate like the dew, Like a downpour upon the grass, like a shower upon the crops. For I will sing the Lord’s renown. Oh, proclaim the greatness of our God! The Rock – how faultless are his deeds, how right all his ways! A faithful God, without deceit, how just and upright he is! Yet basely has he been treated by his degenerate children, a perverse and crooked race! Is the Lord to be thus repaid by you, O stupid and foolish people? Is he not your father who created you? Has he not made you and established you? Think back on the days of old, reflect on the years of age upon age. Ask your father and he will inform you, ask your elders and they will tell you: When the Most High assigned the nations their heritage, when he parceled out the descendants of Adam, He set up the boundaries of the peoples after the number of the sons of God; While the Lord’s own portion was Jacob, His hereditary share was Israel. So Jacob ate his fill,) the darling grew fat and frisky; you became fat and gross and gorged. They spurned the God who made them and scorned their saving Rock. They provoked him with strange gods and angered him with abominable idols. They offered sacrifice to demons, to “no-gods,” to gods whom they had not known before, To newcomers just arrived, of whom their fathers had never stood in awe. You were unmindful of the Rock that begot you, You forgot the God who gave you birth. When the Lord saw this, he was filled with loathing and anger toward his sons and daughters. ‘I will hide my face from them,” he said, “and see what will then become of them. What a fickle race they are, sons with no loyalty in them! (Cf. Dt 32,1-20).

Even the Psalms remind the nature of the Lord’s people. It is a generation that just wants the benefits from his God. Having taken the good, one forgets that He is God, the Lord, to whom all obedience in the strictest fidelity to the alliance pact is due.

Jesus comes, his generation wants every miracle. But it does not want the conversion to his Gospel, to his Word. It wants the benefits that are the result of obedience in true conversion, but does not want the tree, that is, faith in the Word of Jesus.

While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.

Jesus says it clearly: for every miracle obtained, which is a powerful aid to conversion and faith in the Gospel, they are called in judgment by his Father. The same Queen of the South and Nineveh will condemn Jesus’ contemporaries. Nineveh was converted without miracles. Not even the queen of the South saw one miracle.
